The press conference will discuss the dramatic situation of religious liberty in China, and the persecution against Christians. Although several other groups are also persecuted, including many non-recognized "House Churches", a blatant case concerns the Church of Almighty God. Its activities are proscribed, and its members jailed and in some instances tortured and killed.
The case is of concern in Italy, because some members of the Church have filed religion based refugee claims in Italy, most of which have been denied. Several NGOs have protested this situation, which also exist in other European countries such as Germany, including at the OSCE on September 18, 2017.
The Chinese authorities try to justify the repression by accusing the Church of Almighty God (as well as other groups) of various crimes. Although some Western media, unfortunately, echoed the accusations uncritically, scholars who have seriously studied the issues have concluded that these are fake news spread by the Chinese authorities, whose persecution of the Church of Almighty God started well before the alleged crimes.
