Freedom of Religion, Belief and Conscience: LIREC, the first Center of Studies has been founded

Raffaella Di Marzio

Center for studies on Freedom of Religion Belief  and Conscience (LIREC) partecipates in the Conference about a new Italian law on Freedom of religion at the Chamber of Deputies.

“LIREC, the first Center for Studies on Freedom of Religion, Belief and Conscience has been established”, announces Prof. Raffaella Di Marzio, director of the Association, at the launch of the project at the press conference organized by MP Luigi Lacquaniti at the Chamber of Deputies, to present the draft law on Religious Liberty of which he is the first signatory.

“The Center for Studies on Freedom of Religion, Belief and Conscience is an apolitical, non-profit, secular association that does not depend on any religious organization,” Di Marzio explained, “the Association is based on the agenda of FORB, as there is a lack of awareness of the precised guidelines that the EU issues to Member States to ensure religious freedom within their territories in respect to fundamental human rights and of what is required by its agenda.”

“Ours is not a country where religious minorities are persecuted as, unfortunately, is the case in other parts of the world, yet it has received several recommendations, even from the OSCE/ODIHR, that questioned Italy about the situation of many minority groups. We believe that the fundamental problem is the absence of a law that governs the Freedom of Religion, Belief and Conscience within a State where such constitutional principles have not yet been fully implemented. That is why we are here and we support every effort so that clear rules could be defined, not only to allow people to worship under the protection of these fundamental rights, but also to foster peaceful dialogue and coexistence.”
